African Lion at Sunset – Mala Mala Game Reserve, South Africa
Ok, I can’t take credit for this photograph. My wife, Adrienne, actually took it on safari with her family in South Africa. I couldn’t have taken this photo because you see I have never been to the continent of Africa. Damn I’m jealous. Oh well, I will get there someday.
During a late afternoon drive my wife and guide found this male lion in perfect light. The lion had no interest in the human observers, but tried desperately to scare off one pesky tiny fly. She has several images of the lion growling and showing his teeth that look pretty scary. However, the fly never left and, in fact, landed on the lion’s nose a couple of times. I really enjoy the warm tones of this image and agree that it is a unique view of the king of the jungle. On a side note, you can see how close she was to the lion by looking at her shadow in the lower left hand corner. See, I am not the only daring one in the family!

WOW! That’s a very big cat! I think if I were to get as close as Adrienne did, it would have me for lunch, all 13lbs. of me. The colors are so beautiful and he seems so unperturbed by the intrusion of people. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Great Photo!!! i have been to a game reserve and photographed a lion, but I dare not get that close!! LOL!!
Wow.. Incredible photo.
beautiful
I actually come from Africa and have spent a lot of time in the bush – getting to see a lion up close like that is pretty rare in the larger game reserves. I can really appreciate this picture because it’s not just beautiful (it is!) but because I know how difficult it is to see lion in their natural habitat.
Wow! Thanks for liking my post- you have a beautiful blog. This is an amazing photo- a perfect candidate for Aslan. He doesn’t look scary at all- just very majestic and regal.
Just love lions

I love Lions. This is by far beautiful.
Beautiful photo!
That shot is amazing for many reasons! I had the chance to go to Pilanesberg reserve and the guide wouldn’t let us get out of the car. I got a shot of some females from about a half mile away. These guys are HUGE and I cannot get over how close she was. The camera isn’t shaky at all. Cheers!
WHAOOOO! Super Impressed!
Love this image… there is nothing quite like seeing a lion in nature, totally different experience than a zoo.
Here is my experience with the lions in Africa: http://2riversphotos.wordpress.com/2011/06/11/king-of-the-jungle/
I don’t think they care for humans, they know we’re not a good meal
Wonderful colors.
Love this shot! There is such expression in the lion’s eyes. Thanks for sharing.

Don’t mess with that cat!
I love this image. It’s excellent!
The Missus is very brave. How can anyone shoot anything so majestic and beautiful with a gun, not a camera.

Very nice, love the color tones. Your blog is setup very nice easy to navigate through.
Fantastic photo but there’s no way you’d get me that close to that big boy! (shivers)
I love the color and the softness of the photo
Hi,
Your wife was very brave to get so close to the lion, but what a photo, really nice especially with the late afternoon sun shinning directly onto the lion.
Beautiful capture. I love the warm tones and the harmony with his surroundings
