ALICE I HAVE BEEN

“Alice” – Lempster, NH – Colleen Dubois – Featured Photographer

Charlie’s Super Fantastic Photo Tip of the Day:  Photograph an everyday object from a different perspective.

This is great example of an image that is sitting in front of each and every one of us right now, but rarely do we take the time to look for it. If any of you have images of ordinary objects feel free to post them in the comments section and I will be sure to be one of many to take a look. In the meantime head on over to www.cduboisphotography.com to view more of her great work.

Enter Colleen:

Well, this was taken in August In Lempster, NH sitting on the dock of my mom’s camp on Long Pond. I took the opportunity to read a book, and had my camera in my lap. I stopped and looked up and the clouds seemed to be in the right place and I wanted to capture that time.  I had my Canon EF 17-85, set on 17mm, ISO at 1600 because I wanted to catch the grain in the book as best as I could…so you can almost feel the pages. F20 and Shutter 1/800.  And I guess the rest was luck.  I named it ‘Alice’ because I was reading ‘ALICE I HAVE BEEN’, which is the story of the girl that ‘Alice in Wonderland’ was written about.

  2. The marriage creative vision and deftness of craftsmanship make this a work of sublime beauty.

  3. This book is opening up the sky, breathing out clouds, and fanning the sun. lovely.

  4. One of the best photos have seen here, there is something magical but smart and effective about this one. Thanks for sharing :)

  5. Because I am a writer as and incorrigible bibliophile, my heart does funny little flip-floppy things when I look at this photo. Good books are precisely this way: suspended in time, larger than life, and seeming to emanate their own kind of light.

    Bravo!

  6. WOW. I am in love with this!!!!

  7. Nice idea for a shot!

  8. Truly amazing!

  16. This is a great photo. I want to make it huge and put it on a wall. Maybe to advertise libraries. There is nothing like the feeling of a real book and opening it for the first time…

  17. A stunning and beautiful photo. Jay

  18. Such an awesome photo!

  19. Fantastic shot! Love the light.

  20. I can almost smell the paper.

  21. I defy a book-lover to not adore this photograph. I can barely be objective about it — it’s got graceful pages, a dynamic sky…what else could you want?

  22. As a writer, I think this is a really cool photo. :)

  23. That’s a Great pic!

  24. love reading…lovely shot.

  25. love reading…beautiful shot.

  26. Amazing what you find with just a change of perspective!

  27. I’ll take this as a sign to do more reading this weekend. :) Also that we are all just beautiful stories and I get to choose how my destiny will unfold. I’ll write my own story too. ;)

    Love this.

    Happy Weekend to you!

  28. Awesome! Beautiful is everywhere. If we look carefully we will see it

  30. Makes me wanna go to a park and read :)

  31. Beautiful!

  32. Reminds me of the pages of our lives…we have days filled with light…some covered with clouds…and times in the shadow of grief. This photo inspires me to write. Thank you.

  33. This one wants to have a poem written about it!

  34. Beautiful! I love books and this picture really does justice to the beauty of the object. Thanks for sharing it!

  35. It’s the combination of things I love and the light that grabs me. Gorgeous photo!

  36. A good book, a little sunshine, and good fresh air – perfect!

  37. As a bibliophile who loves the outdoors, I love this.

  38. Terrific shot

  39. Lovely shot. It seems the more we drift away from the old technologies the more we value them. Just as itunes seem to have invigorated vinyl as a format, kindle etc seems to be turning us back to the real substance of literature.

  40. There may be no skill more useful than that of seeing beauty in the Stuff of everyday life. This is a great reminder–and a nice piece of technique smarts, to boot!

  41. Again – pure photography – pure as the light of day.
    No Photoshop. Nice photo.

  42. What an inviting book image – lovely work.

  43. Great lesson about moving the “ordinary” into the “extraordinary.” Am a lifelong book lover/reader too… so this really strikes a chord. Nice!

  44. Shedding light on a subject

  45. Nice shot!

  46. This is stunningly beautiful – book reader or not.
