Apocalypse Now – Dubai, UAE  - Nima Moghim

Nima is a photographer that clearly takes images for himself and others who enjoy an eclectic style and taste. This subway undergoes an amazing transformation in his image. With its’ gritty “Blade Runner” style, you feel like if you continue down the tracks it is inevitable you will reach the Apocalypse. Is there time to get off? I took this photo in Dubai metro in late spring of this year. When I am on the metro train and pass all of these modern life indices which have been arranged like the children logo in this new city, I asked myself where the end of this luxurious life is and whether we don’t get closer to the Apocalypse with progress. The following sentences are my statement to the “Apocalypse now “and my declaration for this photo:

“Apocalypse now….the words which hear frequency at these days and we almost fear. But who takes us toward the Apocalypse ? Who melts the Antarctic ices? Who makes a frightful weapon such as HAARP instead of music? Who throws bomb on his head? Who pours oil in the dark depth of ground in the clear waters? Who leaves his kin at the bottom of well for gaining power? Who prepare the blood baths for the naïve people on the pretext of freedom? Who focus the best trade in the world on the weapon? Who ridicules his fellow citizen on the pretext of inspection? And who transgresses all ethical virtues on the pretext of modernization? All people on the modernity express train are directed to a great explosion and we don’t know where the end is, 2012 or the next thousands of years? God is very patient …..”

  3. some see apocalypse, some see progress … very cool, provocative shot! thanks!

  4. This picture has ‘futuristic’ written all over it, and yet its the present, in an infrastructure-driven place like Dubai. Your words are deep, and go very well with the picture.

  5. Amazing photo!

  6. WOW!

  7. Like science fiction! In one way beautiful but I prefer an old cottage!

  8. This is so breath taking! I love this so much! Excellent job!

  9. Dubai itself is apocalyptic – a horrendous bending of reality to human arrogance, built on the quicksands of oil and imitating the West with the tallest skyscrapers and most creative architects and planners. But they’ve missed one thing: sustainability. It is, like the rest of the world that has worked to bend nature to human fancy, a trainwreck waiting to happen. The picture is magnificent, and so evocative. Thank you.

  10. Wow, this is a great shot. The coloring is perfect for the content (full color would not have been has striking.)

  11. Thats awesome!!

  12. The viewer is immediately pulled into the image. I like it.

  13. Wow. Just wow.

  14. The photo is fantastic and the poetic description – a lot to think about here.

  15. I agree on the “Blade Runner” analogy. Fits perfectly! Wonderful photograph!

  16. The fantastic image and the darkly introspective text work beautifully together here to create a thought-provoking and starkly existential package. Bravo.

  17. unusual.

  18. Love the contrast and motion…

  19. You nailed the very grim, dark, sci-fi look.

  20. Foreboding — we are rushing so quickly into the post-information age. What will we call this age? Social media age? Senseless war age? Fuck the dolphins, I want tuna age? We are so carelessly erasing the bounty and beauty of our planet, I cannot imagine how the human race can possibly last much longer. We won’t need an asteroid, like the one that got the dinosaurs; we are bashing ourselves into oblivion in a happy Facebook/Twitter/ITunes frenzy. Thank everything that’s holy that artists, such as yourself, have not yet lost faith in the art.

  21. We’ve had a family discussion on this one, and yes, we’re impressed!

  22. Very evocative image… I like the impending sense of ‘end days’… as if the human race is on a set course and there is no turning back.

  23. Great composition

  24. My husband spent 4 months in Dubai and his photos looked nothing like this! Very cool.

  25. The future has arrived.

  26. Great image

  27. Fantastic!

  28. great surreal, fantasy feel!

  29. Excellent photo… so real and yet futuristic… cold, sterile and yet giving light… Quite a mixture of elements blending in this one…. I don’t care for it and yet it is captivating…

  30. WOW! Yes, God is very patient and kind. He is in control even when it doesn’t look like it!

  31. Stellar!
