The Basque Forest - Basque Country, Spain – Oscar Pena

When I first saw this image I was struck by the colors. It is an autumn rainbow forest in the Spanish countryside. This forest looks extremely inviting with its vibrant colors and cotton candy textured stream. Finally the moss covered roots of the nearest tree creates a great focal point. Ever since Isabel Díez’s work made this forest well- known, it has become an emblematic location for all photographers in the Basque Country as well as one of the most popular spots in our geography.  It’s been difficult to meet the perfect conditions for this snap: the dazzling autumn colors, a rushing stream —which is usually dry— and some fog make it possible to create the ‘charcoal forest’ atmosphere that is so typical of the Basque Country.  A polarizing filter was used both to highlight the color and to minimize glare. In addition, a 2-stop neutral density filter was applied to optimize upper and lower exposure.  As for composition, the diagonal drawn by the stream induces a clear sense of depth in the picture; the main tree and its roots appear in an outstanding position while great care has been taken so as not to overlap the rest of the trees.
