Dawn of Time – La Paz, MX

It always pays to get up early and this sunrise was literally the pot of gold waiting on this day.  While staying on the Sea of Cortez I felt a bit like John Steinbeck writing his morning log.  I woke up early as always and walked down to the beach with my camera setup and waited.  This area is loaded with frigate birds, so I was waiting for one to fly by.  No luck.  When the sun did rise it was a bit lacking due to the lack of mountain or island topography.  I still shot a couple of full on yellow images when directly through my viewfinder came these three brown pelicans and made the shot a heck of a lot more interesting.  Whenever I see pelicans I think of the Cretaceous period when the world was extremely warm.  The tropics dominated and there were strange beast everywhere.  This was certainly the case in Baja.

  19. Aren’t pelicans amazing? I make the same connection, except that when they’re flying, I think they look like they themselves came from the Cretaceous. I could sit and watch them all day, and never tire of their shape, their flight, their general wonderful-ness. Lovely shot — thanks!

  20. I haven’t been on your site very long, but this may be my favorite foto so far. I get up early every day and walk when the park is quiet and you’re alone with its inhabitants; a true joy.

    You are very talented indeed.
