Sunshine through the Rockies (Dream of Fire) – Rocky Mountains, Colorado – Dan Ballard

Some photos are worth waiting for and when you get one you forget how long it took to find it. You just remember that moment. I read a quote earlier in the week stating that “life is not measured by days, but simply by moments”. I believe for Dan this was one of those moments and I am glad he could share it with us. Snow in the Rocky Mountains is so different from the weather here in San Diego, but I would have loved to been here with Dan and his student. I have been dreaming of an image that showed off the cold of winter after the first snow, with the warm brilliant light of morning for years.   I have made countless trips to the high country trying to find these conditions and have always been disappointed.    Finally, everything came together in one of the most epic mornings I have ever seen.    I was teaching a private photo workshop, and this was my student’s first trip to this location.   Very lucky guy!   It was freezing cold and the wind chill at nearly 10,000 feet at 6am was incredible.   We left Denver at 2:30am and started hiking around 4:30am in the snow to get to the location on time.  We made it about 15 minutes before this amazing light hit the peaks.    We had to jump, crawl and slide over rocks in the lake to get to a location to set up.   Not fun considering the high wind and freezing cold water all around us.   It was worth it to get the image.   My student from California said it was one the best mornings of his life!
