Dunlewey Church - Dunlewey, Ireland – Alan Owens
After the morning spent photographing Fanad Lighthouse on the north coast of County Donegal I headed for Gweedore and the little village of Dunlewey. Ever since I had seen photos of the old Dunlewey church I wanted to photograph it. As I got closer to my destination the rain rolled in and it looked like it was going to be a wasted trip. However after an hour or two of waiting the rain began to clear, and I quickly got my gear together to shoot.
The cloudy skies above gave a nice moody feel to the image. The tombstone on the ground provided me with a foreground interest for the image and my wide angle lens allowed me capture the whole scene.

Thank you Anita
Thisis awesome what a find!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Don, I appreciate it!
This is Ireland for me … churches that look totally abandoned, standing strong and solid … and alone.
Stunning photo. The sky is very Irish too .. lived there for 11 years in total.
Glad you like it Viveka! It is very Irish alright
I agree with swabby429 on this one!
Thank you Cathy
The first thing I thought of when I saw the photo was, “ghost story.” Moody and foreboding. Great photography.
Thanks for the kind comment James!
Thank you for your kind comment swabby429!
This is lovely. Soothing, to me. The gray of the church against the differing grays in the sky…the variegated greens in the foreground… Just a lovely combination of color.
And there is a story here. Somewhere.
Thank you very much Sandi! Well a little background is that this church was built by Jane Smith Russell as a memorial to her husband James Russell landlord of the Dunlewey estate who died on the 2nd of September 1848.
As soon as I left this website after seeing your picture, I went to look up the history of the place myself.
Thank you!
Someone could write a novel around the mood of this image.
