Great Bend – Letchworth State Park, New York – Christopher Cove

The more images we feature the more I realize you can get great fall color in upstate New York. Chris captures an image I would expect from main not New York! Here is another blast from the past http://www.photobotos.com/walk-with-me/ that shows New York potential. Please read Chris’ story below and then visit his excellent portfolio of the Northeast and beyond here www.covenaturephotography.com.

Enjoy!

This photo was taken in Letchworth State Park in Central New York State on an early fall morning of 2004. Many people outside of New York State do not know Letchworth State Park. It is called the “Grand Canyon of the East”. It is a large gorge with the Genesee River running through it. There are 3 large waterfalls and as many as 50 smaller ones. Its relative obscurity makes it a photographers paradise! The time to go is in the fall when the colors in Central New York can rival New England. This section of the gorge is call “Great Bend”. On this morning I was blessed with a wonderful low lying fog that hung just above the water. I was using my Canon 1Ds and the Canon 24 mm Tilt Shift lens. I love this lens because you can extend your depth of field by tilting the lens and making your field of view more parallel to the film plane. The one thing that was lacking was a beautiful sunrise. Although there was slight color in the sky I wanted a little more drama. So my orange tinted graduated neutral density filter came to the rescue. This provided some color and held back the sky creating a more balanced exposure. I used F20 and an 8 second exposure to create some movement in the clouds so a tripod was a must!

I have been to this spot many times and knowing it well really helped setting up and composing in the darkness. I strongly advise any photographer to make a trip to Letchworth State Park in the fall. Make sure you bring your Tilt Shift lens, a good set of graduated Neutral density filters, a strong tripod and a good bit of luck! Thanks for viewing.
