Lost Among the Stars

Lost Among the Stars – Dalles, Oregon – Lijah Hanley

Do you believe in ghosts?  I don’t until I am walking my dogs in an empty Canyon near my house at 4:30 in the morning.  I usually wake up between 4 and 5 and the first thing I do is walk the dogs and call all of my friends and family on the east coast.  Talking to them helps me take my mind off of what lurks beyond the shadows.  Yesterday it was a 70lb. coyote!

Lijah not only has an interesting image of what appears to be a haunted house with a beautiful galaxy behind it, but a great story as well.  He goes on to explain how I would feel if I were in the same photographic situation he was in when his mind started to play tricks on him. So please give it a read if you dare…. (enter annoying vampire like laughter here). Also check out the rest of his spectacular imagery at his website here:

June 19th was the new moon, so I decided to test out my new 16-35mm lens by heading out to the Dalles, OR to shoot the stars. I made the 2 hour trip out to the old “Emerson House” and arrived at midnight. I got out of my car and it was deathly silent outside. Looking at the old house way out in the field in the utter blackness made me think twice about walking out there. I am by no means superstitious, but when you arrive at a so called “haunted house” at midnight by yourself, your nerves start to get to you. After about twenty minutes of staring at the house, I finally built up enough courage to crawl under the fence and walk out into the field to photograph it. I set up, (and by this point I am really freaking out!) and fired off 4 shots. Then I start hearing noises in the complete silence of the night, but I shrug them off thinking that I am just paranoid. Then something tips over in the house, it was an unmistakable noise. (really, really freaking out by now!!!!! eek!) My mind starts making up all sorts of explanations. Then I hear an awful blood curdling screech, and 2 very large birds came stampeding out screeching and hollering strait at me. I freak out, run– trip, run -dive, freak out that I almost broke my new 16-35, scramble under the fence leap into my car, and speed off as fast as I can. I do not think I will be back to the Emerson house, unless it is with a very large parade of people. This is one of the 4 shots that I got before I was chased out by some pterodactyl screeching bird thing. (I never did see what type of bird, looked too big to be an ordinary owl) This image was made by using a flash light to paint light on onto the old building. Enjoy!

  10. I must say those were hillarious stories. Both of them. And the Images is just spectacular. I have yet to explore the light painting concept of photography

  11. What a hilarious story. I can feel your anxiety and know that I have felt similar in the presence of houses that just give you the creeps. And that’s before you even hear sounds.
Seriously it is a drag that you broke equipment, but you got out safely and that’s good. I am surprised you didn’t need to change your shorts after all that!!
    Hauntingly beautiful photograph

  12. Very nice!!

  13. Having lived four years in an orchard not too far to the north, I can attest to the special qualities of The Dalles — that stretch where the Columbia River’s desert country sepatates from the wet lands to the west.
Look forward to seeing what else you chance upon in this remarkable landscape.

  14. What a stunning photograph, I would love this is my room or classroom…it tells a thousand stories!

  15. I love the background story you have added to this photo; it makes it so magical. The image lets the viewer feel of the wet early morning grass as it envelopes your shoes and the dogs as they lope through it. A very welcome break in what is a blazing hot afternoon in Utah. Thank You!

  16. Where is the orange light in the window coming from? Flash?

  17. Cool photo and a fun story!

  18. I believe in ghosts and if you really look at the grass, it looks as if it does too. Like every blade is standing on end. Love the photograph.

I can’t say that it looks much like a photo though –

  40. Whoo! Definitely spooky! Great shot. Thanks for sharing.

  41. What a supernatural almost comic-book style shot. Amazing color and with the light added to the house, it gives it a sense of ‘after-life’ presence.

  42. WONDERFUL! simply wonderful!

  43. Brave – worth the fright!

  44. Reminds me of ‘Courage, the cowardly Dog’ 🙂
