Monkey Business – Spider Monkey - Yucatan Peninsula, MX

Sometimes you have to hike deep into the jungle to find wild animals.  I have done this throughout Central America to find all four species of monkeys.   Other times you just need to walk to breakfast!  My best photographs of spider monkeys have been taken in the Yucatan peninsula either at the all-inclusive hotel we were staying in or the outskirts of the Crococun Zoo.  These spider monkeys are completely wild just like the ones I have seen in Tikal and Costa Rica, however they have learned to adapt to their rapidly shrinking habitat.

This particular little guy was just above my head and I photographed him with a 16mm lens.  There was a branch that crossed the path that they were using as an arboreal highway, so I just sat under it and waited.  Sure enough a spider monkey came along and I grabbed the shot.  His hands are a bit out of focus because they kept tapping on my lens.  So remember always keep your camera near so you are ready when opportunity strikes.

  9. Oh, well captured!

Speaking as a layman, I don’t mind that the hands are blurry–as long as the face is in focus! Did this little fellow get fingerprints all over your lens?

  10. I really like this photo! A very interesting angle and great vivid colours.
