Northern Cardinal – Baja Sur, MX
Okay, this should snap you out of your winter blues. Here is a fiery red northern cardinal from Mexico. Yup, that’s right, I said Mexico. These little guys range from Canada to Central America, but they don’t migrate so you can see them year round throughout their range. If you live in the Midwest or Northeast just put up a birdfeeder in your backyard and fill it with sunflower seeds and you are bound to get a cardinal before you know it. Don’t forget to set up your camera beforehand so you can snap a great shot. One more tip… Rather than photograph the bird on a feeder, set up a stable perch (branch or twig) near the feeder. When birds are waiting their turn they will likely sit here and you can get a very natural looking shot. So have at it and send in your northern cardinal photographs. We would love to see them.
Share and Enjoy

Yeah, I see red cardinals in my backyard every once in a while. They are rare to find though. I wonder if that is the same exact one?
This photo is so fiery! Nice contrast to the cardinal-on-snowy-branch photos that I see (and love) so often here in new England.
Thanks Charlie for sharing the technical information on the lenses you use to shoot. If you go down the road of shooting video with the canon cameras you can always shoot me a note with any questions you may have. I’ll be more than happy to share whatever advice I can.
Oh my God, I just want to bite its head off (I mean, it’s so cute I just want to eat it up, I don’t mean that I want to dismember it or anything horrible like that ahahah)! Lovely photograph

Oops. Fact check reveals the Robin is Wisconsin’s state bird. State flower for both states is the violet. My bad.
My daddy whistled like a cardinal every time he wanted his kids’ attention. Love my state bird; lived in Illinois 29 years, now I live in Wisconsin…same state bird. How do I send you a photo?
Hi I am going to submit a photo soon, but please can you have a look at these fun things to do in the snow

What an incredible shot. The light and the colours are fabulous. Thanks for sharing. D.
superb shot! thanks for warming our winter morning (in Portland, Oregon).
I love cardinals. When I moved to Alabama I looked out and they were in the trees in the back yard. Beautiful.
I live in the Midwest, Chicagoland area, and yes you are correct about setting out the bird feeder and being able to see these magnificent birds. As a cinematographer in the video and film world, I am wondering what camera you use to capture your beautiful images. At our creative agency we have a Canon 7D. I exclusively use it for video productions and I really love the camera. For most of the low budget shoots I tend to use a 24mm to 135mm zoom EF series lens. On the bigger budget productions I use the EF primes and will be experimenting with using the Zeiss DSLR film series lenses soon.
I have also worked with the 5D Mark II, but I prefer the 7D. Do you use Canon or Nikon as your camera of choice. I have also shot with the 7D and Nikon primes, the old school SLR series primes for a project and it gave me some really amazing results.
Thanks for sharing your talents with us.
Hey! This is Tom. Charlie is taking photos in Nevada until tomorrow (yeah, I know, another vacation for Chralie! haha). I will make sure he gets back to you!
Thanks Tom. I look forward to hearing from Charlie soon.
Hi, This is Charlie! I use only Canon bodies and Lens for all of my shoots. This is not because I feel they are superior to any other brand, it is just that I am comfortable with their layout and know them well. I have never used the 7D, but I have used the 5D, 1D Mark II, and 5D Mark II many times. For close up work I use the Canon 100mm Macro for small things and the 16-35mm 2.8L II for close up wide angle shots. For wildlife I like the 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L or the 400mm prime lens with the Canon 1.4 teleconverter. I have shot a lot of video, but when I start I will be sure to ask for your advice. Thanks again for checking out our daily photos and expect bigger and better things to come. Blue Skies, Charlie
