Swinging Baby Bonobo
“In Dreams I Can Fly”– Apenheul Primate Park, The Netherlands – Manuela Kulpa – Featured Photographer
This definitely brought a smile to my face when I first opened it. Whether in childhood or “apehood” innocence is bliss. Manuela has captured the chimpanzee’s vegetarian cousin in a perfect light. Please view Manuela’s blog to see her unique style on capturing wildlife http://www.erblicken.com

It was a very touching moment when I saw on the face of the little bonobo neither a grimace nor bared teeth or another sign of tension. It was just pure kindness and warmth – this is it, why great apes appear so human to us.
The IUCN Red List classifies bonobos as an endangered species with conservative population estimates ranging from 29,500 to 50,000 individuals. Major threats to bonobo populations include habitat loss and hunting for bush meat, the latter activity having increased dramatically during the first and second Congo wars in the Democratic Republic of Congo due to the presence of heavily armed militias even in remote “protected” areas such as Salonga National Park.
Organizations such as the World Wide Fund for Nature, the African Wildlife Foundation, and others are trying to focus attention on the extreme risk to the species.

Lol. That smile is contagious.
Like an innocent child. I love that the background it blurred.
one can barely find such an expression on a human anymore..
The tranquility and innocence of it is so refreshing!

I love this photo! Each post is always amazing! You guys are doing a fabulous job. I can’t wait to open each post every day and see yet another outstanding photo! Thank you!!!
Excelent photo of this small wonderful and happy creature!
What really amazes me here is that something so newborn and tiny can hang onto and, apparently, climb a rope. Astounding. Oh, yeah–and it *is* a good photo!
Oh my goodness!! I’m not sure but I think it’s cute.
this is a beautiful shot, you captured a great moment!
What a wonderful photo. It brought a smile to face and joy in my heart. Jay
Oh, my goodness! Could he be any cuter! That blissful face, I could just squzzle him!

Bella and DiDi
So precious–love the detail and subject!
Funny thing. I didn’t know anyone was watching at the time!
I LOVE this. Such joyful innocence! Beautiful. And we think we’re superior?
I often wish our species took more after bonobos than chimpanzees. All three of us are amazing species. This shot is super.
Love it! Thanks for sharing.
Love that face.
Great title – great photo!
I want that expression of peace!
Wonderful photograph of sheer joy. Great.

Either that is one huge rope, or one tiny monkey. He is precious, either way. Love the smile!
too cute!
This pic is just too adorable!
So sweet!
Look at that face – gives serenity all new meaning. Belongs in National G. a calender perhaps. So uplifting.
Soo … cute and tiny .. and adorable – lovely photo. He or she seems to enjoy hanging there .. the little cheeky grin on the face. Priceless.
I am among the very few in the world who don’t think that baby primates are cute, cuddly, or even safe to treat as though they were. This is a great shot, and highlights that 97% of our genome that matches, but people who have attributed human affection or love from primates sometimes end up in a world of hurt. They are not us.
And, as in the comments before mine, people love to attribute human emotions of joy, wonder, love, happiness, peacefulness — doing so is to propagate a very dangerous myth, that we can interpret what these wild animals are feeling, and then trust our interpretations. My guess is that bliss which some see could just as easily be a reaction to a good dump.
I have nothing against primates. I love primates, as what they are: our genetic ancestors, and our easiest way to observe where we once were. I do object to people announcing and ensuring that they can ever know what the animal is thinking.
Give me hell — I don’t care. We should respect each living being for what it is, not what we wish, or guess, that it may be.
Wonderful pic!
The perfect picture of bliss!
How cute is that! Wonderful capture…
Too cute! There’s that smile
Wonderful picture – yes, the little guy looks just like a human toddler enjoying a go on the swings. “erblicken”, by the way, is a German word meaning to spot, to gaze at, to suddenly notice, to see. Perfect title for a website that showcases an artist such as Manuela. Pure bliss!
I could stare at this pic all day – I love it so much
His face looks like the definition of Pure Bliss! So cute!
Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow, I’m in love
“like” button. This monkey fella makes me smile.
I challenge anybody not to smile when they see this picture. It is a wonderful moment, captured beuatifully.
what an amazing image… just sublime. tragic story for the species (like so many), but thanks to images like these and the work of WWF (etc) for raising awareness.
This just makes my day. No wait, my week. How precious!!
just love the smile of joy and satisfaction on his face! Wonderful photo!
How a can a person fail to miss the sense of blissful peace in this.
HE CAN FLY
this is terrrific. Beautiful shot
With each infant born
Is the dream of harmony.
Love of the world it sees
Not knowing the negativity,
That lives beyond it’s tree.
A life so precious a heart so pure
The kingdom of God loves and adores.
