Twelve Apostles – Great Ocean Road, Australia

Running for over 150 miles along Southeastern Australia is one of the most scenic roads in the world.  Don’t worry fellow Americans!  I know Highway 1 through Big Sur is beautiful as well, but with a name like “Great Ocean Road” how can you argue?  Besides I said “one” of the most scenic.  You see it hugs the coast most of the way while traversing through small towns and secluded beaches.  As a surfer, it is the ultimate surf check road.  The ocean storms here blow up straight from Antarctica without anything blocking their path therefore creating some of the largest waves in the world.  This raw power is evident when viewing the many rock formations carved out of the limestone cliffs along the way.  This amazing formation is known as the “Twelve Apostles” and located about 4 hours into the drive.  Not quite sure why they still call them the twelve apostles because there are only eight left.  The one in the foreground fell about a month before we arrived.  So get there soon or else you will drive four hours to get to the spot formerly known as “The Twelve Apostles”!

  9. I am fortunate to live just over an hour away from the Great Ocean Road, so a drive to the 12 Apostles is a regular trip for me. I have taken dozens of pics there. You are most welcome to visit my blog to see more of these cliffs along with some other stunning Australian beaches.

  12. Seeing your photo brought back fantastic memories of my travels around Austrailia particularly Victoria. Oh dear, I have itchy feet again!

  13. When all the rock formations are gone from here there is still the Bay of Islands not far to the west. For me the Bay of Islands was far better than the Apostles. If you visit this place spend the money on the Helicopter flight on your first day.

  21. This is an awesome picture, and thanks for visiting my page, I really appreciate your interest, you have some amazing photos here!

  22. As a former ‘Melburnian’ I’ve taken this route about 5 times, the first time we got a flat tire and were stuck in one of many bends for a good hour. Not so fun. But if you get lucky, you might be able to spot some whales bathing just off the coast around Allansford – definitely worth the drive!!

  23. I’d suggest not going in the thick of winter. Was there a couple o’years back on a very cold winter’s day. That part of Oz, being the lowest (apart from Tasmania) is subject to the cold winds off Antarctica. As well, on that day, there was fog as far as the eye could see. We were happily surprised when, as we approached the Apostles, the fog cleared and we were able to get some great shots… Phew… a long drive for nothing if you are a photo bug looking for a great pic… The road is also quite winding in parts.. need to drive a little more slowly and cautiously; however, well worth the trip…!

  24. Awesome site! Thanks for stopping by! I will be back!

  29. Hi,
Truly a beautiful part of Australia. The Great Ocean Road is 263 km or just over 163 miles long, there are steps that lead down to the beach from the cliff face, near the Apostles, which is 70 meters or about 200 feet down. A lot of history of shipwrecks here in days gone by.
A fantastic photo of what is left of The 12 Apostles.

  30. Very nice.

  33. Thanks for sharing the story… adds to the image :)

  34. I’m looking forward to visiting Austrailia one day (hopefully in the next year or two) and this photo really makes me want to see this sight! I love the drive along the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) in Cali and the drive in the northwest from Vancouver to Seattle which are both, in my opinion, beautiful as well…but who doesn’t appreciate more than one scenic location?! Thank you for your post!

  35. Seen a lot of Australia, but this section in on our next trip. Thanks for the reminder.

  36. Thanks for the great pic! This spot is definitely on my bucket list, now that you’ve shown it to me.

  37. The cliffs are artistic in themselves! How many miles of cliffs like these are they? I vote this to be the best drive!

  38. I have been there too, it is stunningly beautiful.
